Free Poker Strategy Tips and Advice From Everest Poker
Here are some general poker strategy tips that have helped many of our players create a winning strategy. Refer to these when you're first exploring our free poker games and you'll be ahead of the competition while building a poker playing strategy!
- Don't feel like you have to play every hand. Many novice players feel compelled to enter every hand. Take the time to study your pocket cards, your position at the table, your chip stack and your opponents. If the odds of winning are against you, don't be afraid to fold. In poker, playing more doesn't necessarily mean winning more.
- Consider your table position. In Omaha and Texas Hold 'em poker, your position in relation to the Dealer is key in determining how you should play a given hand. Starting at your seat and moving to the right (counterclockwise), count how many seats are between you and the Dealer Button. A high number of seats is called being in late position, which allows you to observe your opponents' actions prior to making your own. A small number of seats is called early position, meaning you must act before most of your opponents. Both positions can be advantageous, depending on your pocket cards and how you choose to play them.
- Weigh your pocket cards carefully. In a deck of 52 cards, there are 1,326 different combinations of hole cards that can be dealt to you. Of those combinations, 78 of them are pairs. Consider these numbers in regards to your position at the table and your opponents' actions. You don't have to play every hand to be successful. Use your pocket cards as the basis to make educated decisions on whether to play or fold.
- Think before you bet. Have you completed your hand? Or are you drawing for a better hand? Study how your opponents are playing and make educated guesses as to what their hands are. Have they completed their hands? Or do you put them on a draw? Carefully consider what poker hands you can beat and what hands would beat you before taking action.
- Learn when to call, when to raise and when to fold. When a facing a bet from another player, take into account the size of the bet in relation to the size of the pot and the strength of your hand. Does the potential reward of winning outweigh the risk of losing? Depending on the table, it may be more profitable in the long run to definitively win many smaller pots rather than risk losing your chips in a large pot.
- Control your table image. Just as you are studying your opponents, they, in turn, are studying you. The image that you project at the table could very well affect your chances of winning a hand. Your opponents will take notice any time you enter a hand and analyze your style of play. Pay attention to how often you raise and call and note that repeated action (i.e. aggressively raising) will be observed around the table. Take advantage of the option to muck your cards. Showing your cards is good in some situations and bad in others. What you allow your opponents to see will affect how they perceive you. The game of poker is not only about reading other players, but about how you represent yourself.
Keep these tips in mind when you're playing with us and you'll soon develop your own winning poker tournament strategy that will help you get even larger rewards for your efforts. We recommend that all players take the time to put together their own poker playing strategy that works best for them.
